Hot pans, boiling water, sharp knives. The kitchen is basically a hazard buffet for curious toddlers. And yet, it’s where we spend half our lives as parents, usually with a baby on one hip and a pot threatening to boil over.
I’m a mom, a dentist, and the founder of Geddy’s Mom, which means I spend a lot of time thinking about how accidents happen, and how to prevent them. Over the years, I’ve developed a few non-negotiable kitchen safety habits. They don’t require fancy gadgets. They don’t cost a cent. In fact, one of them even saves me money AND time.
Habit #1: Back Burners Only
The front burners on my stove? Off limits. Always. They’re at toddler eye level, and nothing good comes from boiling water within arm’s reach of a child. I don't believe I've used my front burners in 7 years!
Habit #2: Pot Handles In
Every pot handle in my kitchen has one rule: handles in, away from me towards the wall. One simple twist prevents a toddler from grabbing a handle or an adult from bumping into it and sending dinner (and danger) flying.
Habit #3: No Tablecloths, Runners, or Placemats
No tablecloths, no seasonal runners, no placemats. Why? Because kids don’t see “decor.” They see something to yank. And when they pull, down comes everything on top. By skipping linens altogether, I’ve eliminated a hazard and saved myself the trouble (and cost) of buying and constantly washing them. Safety win and budget win AND schedule win.

Babyproofing isn’t just about outlet covers and cabinet locks. It’s about small, everyday choices that prevent accidents before they happen. These three habits: back burners only, pot handles turned in, no table linens, make my kitchen safer without adding any extra gadgets.
